Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is a type of treatment for kidney and ureteric stones. High energy shock waves are applied and delivered externally through the skin to aid breakage of the stones into smaller pieces allowing spontaneous passage through the ureter (water pipe connecting the kidney to the bladder) without the need for General Anaesthesia and with less complications in comparison to other urological procedures to treat kidney stones. The procedure is performed as a day case. This technique is preferred in suitable patients with stones less than 2 cm.
